Participation in the Annual International Conference of the Geological Remote Sensing Group, Frascati, Italy

Applicant: Muhammad Qasim
MSc. Geospatial Technologies

Thanks to the Santander Mobility Fund, I had the opportunity to attend the 35th Annual International Conference of the Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG), held from December 9th to 12th, 2024, at the European Space Agency (ESA) ESRIN campus in Frascati, Italy. This global event brought together researchers, professionals, and students to explore advancements in remote sensing and geological studies.

At the conference, I presented my work titled “Geospatial Assessment of Sand Dune Dynamics and Coastal Vulnerability: A Case Study of Hobyo District, Somalia." My study analyzed sand dune movements and assessed coastal areas prone to vulnerability using geospatial tools. As the focus of the conference largely revolved around Europe and the Americas, my presentation on a least-developed nation stood out for its unique regional perspective. The positive response and appreciation I received highlighted the need for attention to underrepresented study areas like Somalia.

The conference was valuable for multiple reasons:
- I engaged with a diversity of topics relevant to my master’s degree, such as geological mapping, AI-driven hazard monitoring, and coastal management, all of which involved geospatial technologies.
- Attending talks by industry leaders introduced me to new ideas and emerging trends in the field.
- I networked with researchers, professionals, and students, exchanging insights and exploring potential future collaborations.

In addition to the scientific sessions, the social activities were equally enriching. A highlight was exploring Frascati’s cultural charm and attending a memorable dinner at Villa Tuscolana.

The conference gave me a deeper appreciation for how geospatial technologies are addressing global challenges like climate change, resource management, and natural hazard mitigation. Witnessing the innovation and passion within this community was truly inspiring.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Santander Mobility Fund for making this transformative experience possible. To everyone I connected with at the conference: thank you for the conversations, ideas, and motivation. Let’s continue working together to advance geospatial science for a more sustainable future.
